About

Breitenbach-Anderson Funeral Home is warm and welcoming, and our staff is experienced and compassionate. We know losing a loved one is hard, and we’re here to guide you through every step of planning a funeral, cremation or memorial. Serving the community of Middletown, we are your friends and neighbors, and we are always ready to listen and help. Funeral service options have evolved in our many decades in business, but our commitment to high standards remains unchanged. Our funeral home appeals to all cultures and religious backgrounds to bring peace of mind to families from all walks of life.

A modern Middletown funeral home

Chapel at Breitenbach-Anderson Funeral HomeBreitenbach-Anderson Funeral Home on South Sutphin Street in Middletown is a comfortable place to plan a funeral service. With a range of modern amenities, the funeral home has a contemporary chapel with flexible seating for more than 100. Designed and decorated like a personal residence, it includes a grand piano in the chapel. With manicured lawns, plenty of parking and ground-level access, the funeral home shows that the Anderson family understood the importance of details.

Cremation services

Anderson Family Life Celebration Center, located adjacent to Anderson Funeral Home in nearby Franklin, holds a crematory that provides cremation services for all three Anderson locations. A private crematory means your loved one never leaves our care.

Not everyone knows that there are many cremation options. If you are interested in cremation, the funeral home team can explain the process and the different memorial options. From a direct cremation without a service to a full memorial service before or after the cremation, we help you understand this increasingly common choice.

A caring, compassionate team

Front Exterior at Breitenbach-Anderson Funeral HomeWe are proud of our facilities, but the truest strength of Breitenbach-Anderson Funeral Home lies in our caring staff. We focus our every effort on service above expectation, and we are always looking for ways to add value for families and do more for the people we serve.

A few examples of our dedication to your care and comfort: We offer a family car for every funeral, our team transports funeral flowers and plants to your home or another location after the service, and we provide grief support long after a service is over. But perhaps the most unusual—and welcome—service we offer is a tradition owner Charles Anderson instituted years ago.

We send every family who has lost a loved one a chicken dinner the evening after they call or come see us. It’s a small gesture that over the years has touched hundreds of lives. “I can’t tell you how grateful people are to hear, after they’ve spent time making funeral arrangements, ‘I’ve got one more thing to give you,’ and then they receive a roast chicken with all the accompaniments,” Charles says. “Or when someone calls and we have their address and the first touch they have with us is dinner? That’s powerful.” And it’s just one of the ways Anderson lives up to a long reputation for treating people with exceptional care.

History

The history of our funeral home dates back to 1849 when Godfrey Rathman opened a furniture store and undertaking business. His son Emil Rathman worked alongside Godfrey. Following Godfrey’s death, Emil continued the business as Rathman Funeral Home.

In 1907, Walter McCoy joined the business, and at the time, the funeral home was located at First and Broad streets in downtown Middletown. Several years later, in 1912, McCoy bought into the funeral home, changing the name to Rathman-McCoy Funeral Home. In 1923, he purchased the Rathman interest and the business became known as McCoy Funeral Home.

In 1940, Homer D. Leffler became a partner in the business, and Walter McCoy retired in 1957. Leffler then became the sole owner of the McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home in 1959 and went on to build the funeral home’s current location in 1960.

A few years later in 1963, Robert L. Breitenbach began working at the funeral home and became the owner 15 years later following Leffler’s death. After 50 years of service and commitment to the community, Breitenbach passed away in 2013.

That same year, Breitenbach McCoy Leffler Funeral Home was purchased by Charles W. Anderson and the name was changed to Breitenbach Anderson Funeral Home. Today, our funeral home is a member of the Dignity Memorial ® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery service providers. With 170 years of history in this community, it is our promise to always be here when you need us.
